The Earth's axis is tilted 23 1/2 degrees. Because the Earth's axis is tilted, we experience different seasons as the earth revolves around the Sun. As the Earth travels around the Sun, there are periods when the north of the planet is tilted toward the Sun. There are also periods when the south of the planet is tilted toward the Sun.
Whenever the north of the planet is tilted toward the Sun, the northern hemisphere receives more sunlight and experiences summer. This occurs from June to September. During this period, the southern hemisphere experiences winter because the south of the planet is tilted away from the Sun.
When the south of the planet is tilted toward the Sun, the southern hemisphere receives more sunlight and experiences summer. This occurs between December and March. During this period, the northern hemisphere experiences winter.
The video below explains why the Earth experiences the seasons.
