The Universe

What is the universe?

The universe is a term used to refer to all matter and space which exists. Planets, stars and all other objects in space (and even space itself) are part of the universe. The universe is so large that not even the experts are sure how big it is. It seems to go on forever in all directions.

Scientists believe that a very long time ago all matter and energy was compressed into a single point which was very dense and very hot. Then this mass expanded very rapidly, forming the universe we know today and everything in it. This theory is known as the "Big Bang Theory". The universe is still expanding very rapidly to this day. The video below explains the big bang theory in more detail.

The universe contains countless trillions of stars. These stars exist in groups called galaxies. There are billions of galaxies in the universe. Each galaxy contains billions of stars. One of these galaxies is called the Milky Way Galaxy and it contains 400 billion stars. On one of the arms of this galaxy exists the star that we call the Sun. The picture below shows the Milky Way Galaxy and the sun's position within it.
